Combed Cotton vs Regular Cotton: What's the Difference?

Two t-shirts can look the same on a hanger, but after a few washes one stays soft and smooth while the other becomes rough, thin and full of little bobbles. Very often the difference is the type of cotton used. Let’s look at combed cotton versus regular (carded) cotton in simple terms.

What Is Regular Cotton?

After cotton is picked and cleaned, it is “carded” — passed through machines that untangle the fibres and line them up roughly. This carded cotton still contains a mix of long and short fibres, plus small impurities. It is cheaper to produce and is used in many budget t-shirts.

What Is Combed Cotton?

Combed cotton goes through an extra step. Fine-toothed combs remove the shorter, weaker fibres and remaining impurities, leaving only the longest, strongest fibres neatly aligned. Around 15–20% of the raw cotton can be removed during combing, which is why it costs more.

Why Combed Cotton Feels Better

  • Softer: long, aligned fibres create a smoother yarn that feels gentle on the skin.
  • Stronger: fewer weak points means the fabric resists tearing and thinning.
  • Less pilling: short fibres are what form those annoying little balls; combing removes most of them.
  • Better colour: smoother yarn absorbs dye more evenly, so colours look richer.
  • More breathable: a cleaner knit lets air move freely — important in Pakistani summers.

Is Combed Cotton Worth It?

If you want a tee that lasts more than one season, yes. A cheap carded tee might cost less today, but if you need to replace it after a few months, it ends up costing more. A combed cotton tee can stay in your rotation for years.

Pakistan and Combed Cotton

Pakistan is one of the world’s largest cotton producers, and mills in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore spin some of the finest combed cotton yarn exported to global brands. At Taz Collection we use that same quality locally, so Pakistani customers get international-standard basics at fair prices.

How to Tell the Difference

  1. Feel it: combed cotton feels smoother and slightly cooler to touch.
  2. Look closely: the knit looks cleaner and more uniform.
  3. Hold it to the light: quality combed fabric of the same weight looks more even.
  4. Check the label or description: brands that use combed cotton usually mention it.

Bonus: Bio-Washing and Pre-Shrinking

Combed cotton becomes even better when it is bio-washed (treated with natural enzymes to remove surface fibres) and pre-shrunk (so it keeps its size after washing). All Taz Collection tees go through both processes.

The Bottom Line

Combed cotton is softer, stronger, more breathable and longer-lasting than regular cotton. When you invest in basics you wear every week, the difference is worth it. Explore our men’s, women’s and kids’ tees — all made with premium combed cotton.
